Romania’s leu falls over 3.68 against the euro after the dollar’s hike

Romania’s national currency, the leu, dropped above 3.68 versus the single European currency in line with other emergent currencies and after the dollar recovered.

The leu started at 3.6740 versus the euro and began to fall to 3.6821. At 11:10, banks were buying the euro for 3.6772 and selling it for 3.6846.

The leu is quite stable, with a slight tendency to drop, same as the Polish zloty after the American dollar increased, dealer of the lender Banca Comerciala Carpatica, Florin Tucneanu said.

In the region the Polish zloty lost ground from 3.3273 to 3.3566 against the euro and the Hungarian forint fell from 239.24 to 240.65.

On the international markets, the American dollar gained ground against the European currency from 1.47 to 1.4550. At 11:10, Romania’s hour, the euro traded at 1.4576.

American lender Washington Mutual Inc was closed down by the government and assets sold to JP Morgan Chase & Co for 1.9 billion dollars, the biggest bankruptcy of such a bank. This is the last measure taken by authorities as part of the attempt to help the financial system, profoundly touched by the global crisis.

Interbank interests for overnight deposits slipped slightly to 11.50-12 percent per year, above the annual key interest rate of 10.25 percent.
