Romania's national currency, the leu, advanced close to 3.48 against the single European currency in today's opening session, on high demand for lei, in contrast with the evolution of foreign currencies in the region, dealers said.

The leu increased from 3.4960 to 3.48 versus the euro this morning and then slipped to 3.4930. Banks bought the euro with 3.4850 lei and sold it for 3.49 lei at 11:10 a.m.
On international markets, the U.S. dollar dropped constantly from 1.5450 to 1.5516 versus the euro and at 11:15 a.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.5498 U.S. dollars.
Interbank interests for overnight deposits stood at 11 – 11.25 percent per year, exceeding the monetary policy rate of 10.25 percent per year.
