Romania's national currency, the leu, advanced to 3.6565 against the single European currency in today's opening session, as international markets reacted slightly to news regarding the U.S. economy, dealers said.

The leu increased from 3.6655 lei to 3.66 versus the euro in the morning. Banks bought the euro with 3.6565 lei and sold it for 3.6606 lei at 11:15 a.m.
On international markets, the U.S. dollar dropped from 1.5474 to 1.5538 versus the euro and then started to gain ground. At 11:20 a.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.5490 lei.
Interbank interests for overnight deposits stood at 8.90 – 9.40 percent per year, below the monetary policy rate of 9.75 percent per year.
