Romania's leu climbs to 3.51 versus the euro in today's opening session, on high interbank interests

Romania's national currency, the leu, advanced to 3.51 against the single European currency in today's opening session, following high interbank interests for deposits in lei, in contrast with the evolution of other emergent currencies in the region.
The leu was traded for 3.53 lei per euro this morning and then increased to 3.52. Banks bought the euro with 3.5115 lei and sold it for 3.5165 lei at 10:45 a.m.
On international markets, the U.S. dollar went up from 1.4717 to 1.4618 versus the euro and then dropped to 1.4650. At 10:45 a.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.4649 U.S. dollars.
Interbank interests for overnight deposits stood at 13.5 percent per year, exceeding the key interest rate of 10.25 percent per year, on lack of liquidity on the market.
